í Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) Governance relates to control of services in an SOA architecture.
í Fundamentally, it is a subset of IT governance (which itself is a subset of Corporate Governance) at large.
í SOA Governance focuses on right leveraging of enterprises resources to deliver value to the business. This involves business leaders who can set a firm foundation (based on standards and includes policies, contracts and service level agreements).
í The primary focus of SOA governance is deployment of services that add value to the business. Besides this, effective SOA governance covers people, processes, and technologies.
í ISO 38500 differentiates "Governance", "Management" and "Control". It describes framework with six principles for IT corporate governance. It also gives a model for directors for IT governance. According to ISO 38500, there are three main tasks of IT directors-
o Evaluate
o Direct
o Control.
SOA Governance - Definition
Anne Thomas Manes has given a broad definition of SOA Governance-
“[T]he processes that an enterprise puts in place to ensure that things are done ... in accordance with best practices, architectural principles, government regulations, laws, and other determining factors. SOA governance refers to the processes used to govern adoption and implementation of SOA.”
Anne Thomas Manes emphasizes on SOA behavior, and suggests that behavior must be changed in accordance with the business requirements to make services effective.
Gartner defines SOA Governance as
“Ensuring and validating that assets and artifacts within the architecture are acting as expected and maintaining a certain level of quality.”
Scope of SOA Governance & Issues
- Ensuring Service Quality - The SOA enables addition of new services, which calls for extra attention for maintaining quality (in terms of design and functionality)- both.
- Compliance to standards - In SOA, service behavior is very often unknown, but systems must ensure compliance to legal regulations.
- Delivering stakeholder value – Deployment of SOA is an investment for firm and stakeholders expect return from same.
