Hp’s Quality Center is a comprehensive test management tool and it is a topped-up version of test director. Quality Center is a web-based tool (client-server architecture) and helps maintain a database of tests. Quality Center can be integrated with e-mail systems which facilitate automatic email reminders for bugs or other testing activities.

Quality Center can be integrated with automation testing tools like QTP, Loadrunner etc. This is management of automation and performance testing activities using Quality Center itself. You can use Microsoft word and excel add-ins to import data from word and Excel into Quality Center. These tutorials have been recorded using Quality Center version 9 but you can refer this tutorial to learn Quality Center version 10 or any higher version.

Quality Center categories you test artifacts using domain and projects. A Domain is an independent business software department like ERP, CRM, Banking, Telecom, Insurance etc. Project is an independent software team under a given department, Example, for banking domain there could be teams for net banking treasury wealth management etc.

The basic modules in Quality Center are Requirement, Test Plan, Test Lab and Defects which are used most frequently. Additional modules in Quality Center are Dashboard land Resources.

History of QC:

Quality Center is derived from Test Director. Test Director is developed in C++ and MS access. Quality Center is developed in VC++ and MS SQL.

Site Administrator:

It can be accessed by person is having admin role (project manages, test managers and test leads). In site administration we can manage domain, manage project and manage users (Manage means create, update and delete).

Quality Center:

This part is divided into:

1. Requirement:

Mange the requirements and child requirements (already we know that mange means create, update and delete). The requirement module in the Quality Center is used to store your test requirements. On the basis these stored requirements you will build your test cases.

2. Test Plan:

Create manual and automation test cases. Import a test cases from excel file. You can link your tests in the test plan module with requirements in the requirement module for easy tracking.

Quality Center provides many a features like copying test steps, emailing scripts for review, adding attachment etc.

3. Test Lab:

Execute manual test cases. QC will not execute test cases, you have to execute and update the status as pass or fail. Execute automation test cases (by launching the automation tools like QTP.). Before you begin execution, you need to create a test set tree.

4. Defects:

You will use the defects module in the Quality Center to raise and track bugs. Defects can be added during any stage of test execution. It is possible to add a defect in test lab module while running test cases. For easy of use quality also provides for adding defects by importing them from excel.

5. Resources:

You can upload file for each resource in the test resource tree to quality center repository.

6. Dashboard:

Quality Center provides for reports and Graphs to help analysis, test monitoring and take quick test control decisions. Standard reports and graphs like summary, progress and trend are available in all modules Quality Center always you to customize reports as per requirements.

• Export the data from word / Excel to Quality Center using Tools > Export to QC option in the word/ Excel.

• Rectify errors if any.

How to export the test cases from QTP to QC?

To export test cases from QTP to QC, you first need to establish QTP-QC connection.

• In QTP go to File>Quality Center connection.

• Enter QC URL project name/ domain/ username/ password and click on login. QTP is now connected to QC.

• Next you can select and save the QTP script in QC.

• In QTP, select File menu > save as > Save in QC.

• Select the folder in QC where you want to save the script.

How to export the file from QC to Excel/ word?

Requirement Tab:
Right click on main requirement/ click on export/ save as word, excel or other template. This word saves all the requirements.

Test Plan:
Only individual test can be exported. No parent and child export is possible. Select a test script, click on design steps tab and right click any where on open window.

Test Lab:
Select a child group. Click on execution grid if it is not selected. Right click any where. Default save option is Excel. But can be saved in documents and other formats.

Defects Tab:
Right click on anywhere on the window, export all or defects and save excel sheet or document.

By creating child requirement to main requirements, you can evaluate sub requirements related to the main requirements
